Worthy of Honor

you-are-loved.JPGThere are a number of ministers who regularly visit the Spiritual Oasis. Well, I guess all of the Christ-followers who visit are ministers, aren’t they? But, there are many preaching ministers, youth ministers, pastors and missionaries who frequently stop by. Since this is Pastor Appreciation Month, I wanted to let all of you know that you are deeply appreciated. Thank you for doing the work that you do. Thank you for using your God-given gifts to bless others and build up the body of Christ.

Jeff Slater is a fellow-minister, whose blog I visit often. He writes about life and ministry in an upbeat and uplifting way. His post for today is titled “Worthy of Honor”. In it he links to an article which his wife, who is also a minister’s daughter, wrote for Wineskins Magazine under the same title a few years ago. It is a thoughtful piece and I encourage you to take a couple of minutes to read it by clicking HERE.

The role of minister in a Church of Christ is an interesting paradox. On the one hand as the article mentioned, we want to avoid the “P-word” (Pastor) so as to not indicate a church being led by one person. On the other hand, we expect that “one person” to be competent, empathetic, inspiring, meek, convicted, and knowing of one’s place. In some ways it can be a thank-less job because of the number of people who are critiquing every word that comes out of the minister’s mouth.

I like what a member of a conservative Christian Church told me. He said that they believe that the “vision of the church is staff driven and elder protected.” My fellow elders comprise one middle school math teacher, one lumber salesman, and a full time Sgt. Major in the National Guard. We were not trained for ministry. Our preacher was so we trust him to lead us in “the paths of righteousness” and we’ll do our best to protect the congregation from the daily onslaught that Satan throws our way.

BTW – Thank you Bill for all you do for not only your church but for our Blog family.

  2. I read this article earlier this very day in fact and immediatly sent it out to a large group of folks … my elders and congregation. It is a great piece. Thanks for giving it even wider visibility.

    Shalom,
    Bobby Valentine

Yes, thanks Bill for both the article link and your own service.

I can’t add anything to all of the other things that have been said except to add my own thanks to all of you guys who preach the word and minister against great odds sometimes to people.
